Swift 1805 - Artesania Latina 1/50

Post by Anja » Fri Jan 13, 2012 9:11 am

Hello everybody,

The Swift 1805 is a present from Sjors because I'm really eager to get started and the San Juan will take about three weeks or more to dock.

Artesania Latina 1/50 Swift 1805 Virginia Pilot Boat

The Swift was an early 19th century Virginia pilot boat. Their technical features led the great naval powers of the time to enlarge them creating the famous Baltimore Clippers class.

Length : 540 mm
Hight : 460 mm
Width : 110 mm

PS
I'm not copying Popeye and build two ships at the same time. :D I will finish this one first.

Hi Rick,

Thanks.
Ehhhhhhhh, no, I also refer to a ship as her.
Why? I don't know, maybe that's because so many ship have female names. :banana-dance:

I started my new project, the 'Swift 1805'

All parts for the frame needed to be cut. The laser cuts were not thoroughly done. Maybe the laser was a little bit dull ?
None of the parts fitted on the the false keel. So each item had to be filed to measure.
Unfortunately this wasn't a good piece of wood. There were already cracks in the wood and the wood split while cutting it.

The two lower decks didn't fit as well, so they also had to be filed to measure.
This was not a simply start of a new hobby :? I keep my fingers :handgestures-fingerscrossed:
But luckily Sjors helped me. The frame is now ready. The two lower decks are made to fit and can be placed tomorrow.

that's a common thing, Anja. they don't want the parts falling out while being boxed. you'll get used to all that very quickly. you have a nice start going forward. I'll look forward in seeing more progress.

I am quite envious of your sails.......ready to install......wow!!!

Hi Popeye,
I am quite envious of your sails.......ready to install......wow!!!
Thanks! I'm happy with my sails too, because I don't have a sewing machine.

And about the wood....... It felt a little bit like scratchbuilding to me

A little progress.

The lower decks are in place. The stern step deck is still dryfitted, first the main deck needs to be in place.

Anja, this is a very nice ship to start with the hobby.
I wish you a lot of pleasure building her.

So far you've made nice progress.

I couldn't help myself, because I really like the build. So more progress........

The main deck is planked and despite what the manual said, I put on caulking lines (without any treenails).
Then varnished it to make it a little bit darker. Both lower decks are varnished as well.

looking good so far........a lot depends on the size of the build, as to whether or not to do the tree nails. your more experienced folk will try them, but at this scale....not so much. your decks look great with the varnish....it's good to bring out as much grain as possible :D
