The Susan A. / A Billing's Regina build 1:30 scale

Post by popeye » Tue Jan 10, 2012 9:23 pm

I am near the end of the Mary Ann build. I have started a few too many builds....due to my lack of control in keeping my hands out of boxes. in order to dig myself out.....I decided that I would do them in procession......easiest to the more complex. the Gundalow is done.....the Mary Ann is very close, but I have over 11 build logs on this next one already written. it started out as the Regina, but after making a bad decision, I had to change course......what to do with a ship that doesn't fit the build. I did the easiest thing to do.....change her name.

The Cux 87 was a ship that Tom @ Billing Boats asked me to build for him, to be used as a display at shows and at his shop. it has already been at one show in Chicago.....I'm very happy with the reviews it got. The Regina is a second build that I have been asked to do....I am honored that the Cux met with his satisfaction.

this build is very different than what I have done so far...it's a bit more complex. I devoted two months into the build when I realized that I had to thin down the builds. it was decided that when the hull was stained and sealed, that I would do just that. After I had done it though.....I sat back to look at it, and was stunned by how much dark stain changed the character of the build..... it did not look like the Regina anymore :-? thinking about it for a spell {couple of beers didn't hurt either}, I got an idea.......I e-mailed Tom and asked him what his wife's full name was......hence the name The Susan A. was born {Tom loved the idea}. here is the dry dock where the Susan A. is berthed at the moment. the pictures that you are about to see, are {alas}....the only ones I have in the computer at the moment.....I will post them in the order of the logs I have left. when the Mary Ann is finished, this build will be picked up there after.......Enjoy! :D

this one should bring the build to where it sits right now........under my build table, wrapped in cloth

it was sanded and readied for staining. two planks had to be bent sideways in order to create the center portions of the top rails. the aft deck also went through a bit of sanding to insure flatness.

here is the part of the build that went awry.......I wanted to stain this hull so badly......but I wanted it to be unique..........I love dark.......so much grain...the lines. I stained it upstairs and then it was taken to the cellar for a lacquer spraying. my airbrush outfit works great with lacquer......I had never tried it before.....airbrushing is still rather new to me. I was just going to do above the waterline, but figured that the bottom hull paint would adhere just as well to a lacquered surface.

....and so begins the build of the Susan A.

Hi Popeye,
....due to my lack of control in keeping my hands out of boxes.
Please keep your hands in the boxes :happy-smileyinthebox:

I enjoy seeing you build! And I learn watching it.

it's just basswood.......and some rough stuff too boot! I had to do some pre-sanding just to smooth the tops. in between the planks is thin mahogany, about as wide as the planks. kind of a pain to do, but it's what the instructions said to do. thanks for the good word :D

the build of the Susan A. has resumed. big changes are in the wind for the 'lil lady. for starters, it going to sport a painted hull......too much glue fondu for my liking. not to worry though.....I have a very nice scheme for it I have two build logs on it.....the first one is the start of the transformation, but I found that I was low on thinner, so I had to stop until I got some more. the second log features a few of the sub assemblies and the skylights, how they are installed on the structures and the deck.

I hope you enjoy reading them. as always, I've included highlights from the logs.
