Gee Mike, fantastic looking build!
I can see a lot of inaccuracies on the kit manufacturers side, however you have a model that you can be proud of, I really like the different wood colours.
Do you intend to put sails on her or would you rather dispense with the complicated rigging?
Once again a fine looking model.
Regards
Eric

The model did not come with sails. I do plan to put a life boat on her. The one that came with it was plastic so I bought a wooden generic one that I'm building now. This is my first ship.

That is a great job for your first kit. Mantua does make models that look great.
Like Eric says the kit does contain major things wrong which is true with almost every kit on the market. Mantua rigging is almost always so generic and a lot heavier than it should be and requires a lot of after market blocks and various strings sizes to correct. When I built my first one by Mantua, I did not know that much either. Since then, I have bought many books and am still learning. There is so much available today thanks to so many authors that have spent decades doing research and wrote books about it. Forty years ago, I was pretty much all alone. However, even today, the ships I built long ago still look good and are still impressive. Kits are better today because of the laser cut parts and photo etching.
However, the main thing is to build them and enjoy what you do. Be glad we have the gift of patience that is so rare today and makes our hobby so unique and rewarding. Sit back and enjoy a job well done and one that will give you years of satisfaction.
Happy modeling,
Gary Maple

Thanks Gary,
I had allot of fun building that ship. It was a big learning experience. The next ship in the cue is an Amati 1:200 scale. The hull is a I think called a bread and butter construction where the parts stack up on each other. but what seems to be very intricate rigging. I also have another Constructo 1:50 scale of the H.M.S. Bounty ( think I read someplace that it was really called H.M.A.V His Majesty's Armed Vessel Bounty) that was partially constructed given to me by a friend who gave up. Many hours of fun in the cue. It's a good thing I'm retired and have all the time to spend.
Thanks allot for all yours and Eric's help :text-thankyouyellow:
Happy New Year and Happy modeling to you all.
Regards
Mike :handgestures-salute:

P. S. How do I earn a promotion?

Mike

Hi Mike, with regards the Bounty, yes, it was an HMAV, I think it only had ten guns and as it was not considered a war vessel it did have a rating (well one that I can find anyway).
With regards promotion, you have to study hard, do 50 pushups twice a day, swab the decks four times a day....., seriously though, it is based on the number of posts you submit, at about 50 posts you will become a Petty Officer Third Class, about 100, Second Class, about 250 First Class, and so on. The more posts the higher the rank, so with your next build plenty of pictures and posts and one day you will become an Admiral(oops, sorry that's Jenner)
Have a Happy and Wonderful New Year.
I can hear a beer calling my name.
CYA, regards Eric
PS, even a comment on someones' build counts as a post by you.

really sweet looking ship Mike :D I think you'll find that in some ways, most wood model kits are generic.......whether it's the streamlined rigging, or details that are left out, or changes slightly to fit the model. they are meant to look good right out of the box, but if you want to do the research, you can add in the missing features, enhancing the model even more. the quality of the kits would be a better way of distinguishing whether it's a cheap kit of not. I've haven't built a Mantua kit yet........but I will now {I got one for Christmas}. Gary has it right ;-)
