Endeavour Mantua 1:60 Scale

Postby Sgtmik » Thu Oct 15, 2015 6:44 pm

I started this model about 20 years ago while living in the Middle East and Lost most of it when I moved back home. That was ok because I made a big mess of it. I went back to it recently and I'm attempting to build it from just the plans and what bits I have left. This is it so far
I've noticed that the hull design in other models of the same ship but other makers is different. I recently contacted Mantua's distributer in London and ordered an new set of plans and Mantua also has changed there design.

you'll find that there are many models out there that differ in appearance, from different manufacturers. basically, they have to be careful about copyright issues...but mostly, it's in the license of their own design. after all.....they need to make their kit more interesting than the other brand ;) I have also found that kits are made in production stages.........you might have a first production there. a revised instruction sheet might indicate that their now selling a second production, or even a third. however you build her, research will be your best bet. you have a nice hull to start with :)

Hansel and Gretel used bread crumbs to mark their trail..........what were you thinking!?!?!?!?! :D :D :D

a kit is generic until it reaches your table........after that, the sky is the limit!

Thanks Popeye. It has been allot of fun doing this project. Also with the internet at my finger tips research is allot easier.
I wanted to let you know that I bought that book by Donald Dressel and it is very helpful. Thanks again. : :D

I've been doing allot of work on this ship I know I've made allot of little errors but I'm learning from my mistakes. I'm almost done with the hull. I Just have the rudder to mount as soon as my hinges arrive and the companionway ladders when they arrive. Then I will proceed with the masts. Here is what I have so far.

Hi Mike your model is looking good at the moment, how many deck cannons does your kit have? The original ship had (gone brain dead) ten I think or certainly eight.
I noticed that you live in Vegas, if you have trouble finishing your model take it to Rick's Restoration, he'll do a bang up job!
Have you seen the completed model I posted in "Coffee Time" that model is 1:48.

Eric

Hi Eric,
The model, when I bought it only had those two deck cannons and ten Falconets, I left the two Falconets off the Stern. I just didn't like the way it looked. The big differences in the way the models look even the Mantua model on sale today are much different than the one I have. I found one dealer in London that has a picture of my model in his web site and they market themselves as mantua models. I bought a set of plans and instructions from them, big difference in the two models by the same MFG. This is the original box it came in and has traveled around the world.

I thought maybe I may do a scratch build of Endeavour from those plans some day.
Is Rick's Restoration a shop here in Vegas? Most of the hobby shops here deal in Cars and drone helicopters. It seems no one is in to ship models, must be the desert. Thanks for the comments I'll keep pressing on.

Looks like you are doing a great job. To get the rigging right, you would need Mondfeld's book "Historic Ship Models". Ages of Sail has rigging line from many manufactures and can get supplies from these manufactures. Model Expo carries some other sizes. Also, Art Latina makes some good blocks but the best are from http://www.syrenshipmodelcompany.com/.
If you look at my model of the La Soleil Royal, I used 19 different sizes of line and lots of blocks from various manufactures.
Unfortunately, as you build up your supplies, it can be costly so start early and by as you go.
Good luck.
Happy modeling,
Gary Maple

Problems are just challenges waiting for your solution.

This is the latest in my build. My hinges and companion ways came in from modelers central in Australia, and I have completed the hull/ I have just started with th masts and all. First was the bow sprit and I hope I got the rigging right. I ordered a book on rigging from Amazon by Zu Monfeld. And I am anxiously awaiting it's delivery. Here are some flics of the progress so far.
