the planks go inside the tube? I use a simpler method.....it'll be interesting to see how this works ;)

Hi popeye,
Yes, they do.
The Blue clamps hold the planks suspended in the water.
But, don't forget I am working under a handicap.
Anything I do here in my Stealth Model Shop is subject to the scrutiny of
the BDL *
* = Beautiful Dutch Lady
I live with.
She dislikes my hobbies, tools, machines and the 24/7 she claims I spend on the Internet/keyboard.
A physical impossibility.
Plus running my Yahoo Group.
GlickModelShop
532 members.
A fair amount of ship modelers.
All hobbyists.
What does your method look like?
An open tub?

I tried to look up your forum.......got no listing. send me a link so I can take a look ;) apparently, your handicap will not stop you {I forget what exactly}.......you desire will enable you to find a way....a very admirable trait. :) sad that you admiral disapproves of your hobby......I guess I should count myself lucky in that respect. since the finish of my first build {her favorite}, she has been my strongest supporter......my color coordinator.......and of course, my budget director :D :D she won't let me cheat either...I have to do everything 'by the book'....so to speak.
I'm not sure how my method would work on the more 'exotic' woods, but it works well with basswood and Obechi. I get Obechi from Billing Boats, I'm not sure if any other manufacturers supply it. I just fill the kitchen sink with very hot water and let them soak for a short time. when they come out, they either go on the plank bender that I made, or wrapped in a wet blanket of paper towel until I use them. I glue them on damp, which gives the white glue better bonding properties. I do use brads to hold them in place until dry, but I pull them out and reuse them. I have the insertion tool. Obechi sands very easily, and is porous enough to do well as a first planking......better bonding of the second planking, which is usually done with .7 mm veneer {Walnut, Cherry, etc}. I use Annegre a lot.......another wood that Billings supplies. this is a strange wood.....I had never heard of it. it is supposed to be a cousin of mahogany.....a lighter shade. personally, I think it's basswood that has been stained, but I haven't really looked into it. it's a very cost effective wood for hull and deck planking. I do try to stay within the single planking as much as possible. where I paint a lot, it's been very easy to do :)
