Build Log-Fair American MS2015

Postby jbradford » Tue May 05, 2015 6:28 pm

Well, I am going to try and submit a build log for the Model Shipways Fair American.

The kit does not appear to be too difficult to follow and I will be using Bob Hunt's practicum. He has a couple of modifications that I am going to try as well.

After cutting the keel, stem, stern and bulkheads free, the did not require too much modification to fit. My first attempt at cutting in the rabbit was not as bad as I thought it would be. I glued the bulkheads, made the modifications to the starboard side to simulate a POF model and opened up the aft bulkheads in preparation for the Great Cabin. I then glued the stem, keel and stern pieces to the model and cleaned up and faired the model.

I look forward to any constructive criticism that you may have.

Jeff

Jeff

Looks like you are off to a rousing start here.

I have been looking at this model as a possibility of my next build, as well as a couple of other ships.

I will be following along on your build here, with great interest.

Nice start. The wood looks nice and strong. They seem to do a good job making their kits.
Happy modeling,

I have attached the first 5 planks on each side and will post pictures in a bit. But, I have another question I hope you all may be able to answer. The practicum says to install the 6th plank, called the Black Strake plank and that there are only 2 in the kit, so one on each side. See the pictures attached as the practicum says to notice that it is wider than the other planks. How is 5/32 wider than 3/16?

In the last picture, the plank does look wider. Did I select the wrong strip from the kit?

When I look at the picture, it seems the ends are probably 5/32" while the middle is wider. Maybe they tapered this one down in the front for you so that it would fit right.

According to Bob Hunt's practicum, no tapering is done on the hull planking until below the wales.

2.1 Planking the Hull The hull of Fair American is not too difficult to plank even though I am only going to be showing you a single layer of planking. This single layer is done in basswood, a soft wood used quite often in model shipbuilding that sands and bends fairly easily.

The process of planking the outer hull will be broken down into to primary steps. Planking the upper area which consist of planks without taper in them that go from the top of the hull to the bottom of the wales.

Jeff,
This is a mystery to me as well. I read your post and still can not figure out for you what the deal is with the instructions. It has to be a misprint somewhere. I wonder if they gave you also the wrong "2" pieces as well as an error in the instructions.
I know that you checked your parts list, but I could not resist to go back and look at just your wood only to see whats up with that. I have heard of this kit, but have not built it. I hope you can sort it out. I agree that the measurements do not seem to all add up like it should and also given the 2 planks that should be wider. I am not an expert, but usually wales (as it almost seems here) are a little considerably wider.

I went to Model Expo website and much to my amazement, they had a parts list and you are correct. This is listed as such
WP3622- 24 1/16" x 3/16” x 24” 36 Hull planking, cap rail, fancy cap rail
WP3655- 24 3/32" x 5/32” x 24” 4 Main wales
WP3669- 24 1/16" x 5/32” x 24” 2 Use for Black strake

I also downloaded the instruction manual. The manual on my pdf reader would not allow me to copy and paste a paragraph, but they said to refer to Sheet 6 of the plans to take your measurements from (basically) of what to do. I am sure that you are very aware of all this. I am just confirming what you already are aware of. ...just trying to be of some help here. BUT, now I figured out how to get some of the text here.
