HMS Victory DeAgostini 1/84 Part Work

Postby fragle123 » Thu Apr 30, 2015 11:16 am

Hi all well here is my next build the mammoth HMS Victory at a Length of 4ft 2in Height 2ft 10in and will weigh in at 22lbs and at a scale of 1/84 it is the Artesania Latina kit broken down into monthly issues.
This is the part work kit by DeAgostini and I have now collected every issue over the past 2 years while I was building my HMS Supply so I won’t have to wait for each part every month I can just move on at my own leisure as and when time permits.
The magazine instructions are easy to follow and the materials appear to be good quality and I have started to construct the bulkheads and the keel by dry fitting them first to check there are no problems putting things together before gluing them and so far they fit together perfectly with very little or no need to sand them down.
I won’t be following the assembly instructions in the order of the magazines for every part as some issues have you building cannons and longboats well in advance and I shall also be double planking the hull with a walnut veneer rather than painting or copper plating it and it may not be historically accurate but I’m not a rivet counter and am building this in a way that will please me when finished which is what the hobby is about.
This also comes with some fine detail and includes some figures but whether I decide to use these or not is a long way off so I hope you enjoy this build as much as I am looking forward to doing it and it goes without saying that any comments tips advice is always welcome.
Her are some photos of what i have done sofar today
cheers steve

I have built this very same collection! it does build into a very nice model and as you say it's not for the rivet counter as it does have one or two issues with accuracy. I don't know if you've noticed but the selection of "Different quality hardwoods" promised in the first issue never actually appear, not as that mattered to me as I did a painted and coppered version, plus I didn't bother with the open side view or any of the figures although I did paint the few figures that came with the weekly issues.
The rest of the figures that were sent separately some six months after the collection finished are still languishing in their original packaging on a shelf in my shed waiting to be dealt with at some stage in the future (or maybe never). I look forward to seeing your Victory take shape over the many months to follow.
Good luck, Steve..

Hi Stevie
to be honest i never even noticed about the hardwoods but it does not look to me that they sent any that i can find which wont bother me too much as i have some walnut veneer and bits that i will be using and not sure yet about the figures myself but we will see how things go later, i wont be coppering the hull and doubt i will paint it either but we will see how well it turns out.

Hi all
Here’s where I am upto now I have assembled the keel and fixed in the bulkheads some of these were a snug fit and the last few were quite lose fitting but got them all squared up and placed in the lower gun deck which as you can see comes in 4 parts, I drew lines to show me the central run of the bulkheads for pinning the deck down.
The next thing was to measure and fix the dummy gun supports and having to trim both ends to allow for the curve of the ship to get a flush sitting and with this piece of wood being so thick I had to cut slots into it to help the wood bend into shape this was then glued and pinned in place.
The next step was to measure and fix the deck supports for the middle gun deck, I then drew some planking onto the deck as this area will be seen through the side entrances on both sides of the hull and sealed it with Danish oil.

Steve

I have seen the video of this ship on the net. Found it to be very interesting.
So far, you are doing a beautiful job on this model.

I have heard good and bad about this way of doing a kit. But, I am going to be reading and watching for your critique.

spent yesterday faring the hull and laid my first plank then went onto measuring up the second plank which would run aft when i noticed it did not line up with the stern gallery supports it was then i realised the last bulkhead that the supports fix to was too high so ive had to try and loosen the glue luckily i have been using pva and i first tried using water to soften it up but that did not work so had a look round the internet and found a tip which was to use nail polish remover which after about 20 mins softened the glue enough to remove the bulkhead and having then checked the frame it had not been cut deep enough for the bulkhead to sit in its proper place so i have spent this morning redoing it and fixing the bulkhead back on the frame and alls well again now.

Since this is a very expensive way to build this model, there is no excuse to have this type of problem. Because people have trouble saving money due to live always having emergencies that take away your money, the people making these kits are getting rich on people's misfortune. They do provide a service, but such an error shows that they never tried to build it from their own instructions. Every kit I have seen from this company has a better model made by other manufactures and costs less in the long run but requires you pay for it all at once. But that is just my opinion.
Happy modeling,
Gary Maple

Problems are just challenges waiting for your solution.

Hi GaryM
I agree with you in some respects but you find errors in alot of kits and i should of been more careful and double double checked, how i missed it the first time i dont know and could of kicked my self for it but there you go it was caught in time so no real harm done in the end. Every method of buying our kits has its good and bad points and this kit at the time was well over £700 and doing it this way has increased the cost by a further £150 and it also suited me at the time as i was building my hms supply and using that to learn more skills and hopefully improve my standard of work.

Hi here’s a little update on how things are going, started off by fairing the hull which took quite a few hours to get right and then started on planking the gallery and laying the first plank.
The instructions call for the first row of planking to be laid with the bottom of the plank being lined up with the bottom of the lower gun deck and then continuing up for the first 6 planks and then marking where the bulkheads are on the planks this then becomes one side of the gun ports and the top of the first plank becomes the bottom of the gun port.
As suggested in the mag I made myself a small jig for marking out each of the gun ports which are 12mm square with 16 gun ports on each deck to make, so far the quality of the wood is good with no uneven size planks that can be found sometimes and with a little soaking in water are easy to bend using the plank bender that was supplied.
At first I tried using the plank bender without soaking the planks but with limited success breaking more than I bent but now I have no problems at all with bending them after about a 10 min soak.
The files and pin pusher that also came with the series are not the best quality but so far doing their job but I’m not sure how long the pin pusher will hold out, but that’s not a problem as I have my other one anyway.
Cheers steve
