Your carriages are awesome - I went back and it seems you experimented with different ideas and then came up with the latest version of carriages - is this true? I don't see the steps involved in how you made the ones you have now. They do not look like the original carriages. I did see where you were gluing the sides of the carriages to the bottom of the carriage, so that must mean that those are in three pieces and not one piece.

Hi Donnie, you are correct, the carriages in the picture are not the original ones. They and the brass guns are actually from the Billings Bounty kit that I sold years ago.
The carriages supplied are a copper coloured white metal and look awful. I will post a picture of them as well as the supplied guns which are brass plated.
The reason for the extra pieces on the bottom is that they were too low for the Endeavour.

If your new kit does not come with wooden carriages you should be able to mill them on your Sherline, I can avise you if you are unsure how.
BTW Jim's ship on the header looks great!

Further to the above post here are some comparison pictures between the the 'original' (supplied with the kit) guns and carriages and the Billings modified ones I used.

The gun on the right is from the Billings kit "HMS Bounty" the hole is where the trunnion wire would go through. On the left the mold joins are clearly visible. If they had supplied the guns without brass plating, one can then neaten up the guns and paint them black. The instructions say to apply a patina to the brass.

The guns on the Endeavour were cast iron guns, when the Endeavour holed its hull on what is now known as 'The Great Barrier Reef', Cook and his crew found a wide river mouth (now the Endeavour River) where he careened the ship in order to repair the hull. Just prior to this they had to lighten the ship by dumping a lot of gear they did not need, that included the four spare cannons below deck and at least one of its large anchors. The anchor is outside the front of a hotel in Cairns and one of the cannons is in a museum in Cooktown. The town is just a little way up river from where the Endeavour was careened.

The carriages are made of white metal or British metal. On these carriages everything will have to be glued down using CA glue. The drooping barrel will explain why.

I will admit that there is a nice taper on the sides of the carriages but there is too much space between the gun and floor of the carriage. With the barrel at full elevation the ball would have been put into permanent orbit! or certainly changed the gender of the seagull flying overhead.

The carriage on the right is the Billings one, the middle the kit one and the left the modified Billings one, once again the ubiquitous paddle pop stick came to the rescue.

Admittedly one could drill the carriage but drilling a hole less than 1mm through 2mm thick hard metal would be a laborious task. When the kit carriages are dropped they ring like a bell!
