Artesania Latina Independence Build Log

Postby Stoyne » Sun Apr 13, 2014 4:36 pm

Hello,

This is my first post in this forum and my first wooden ship model build. I have chosen Independence because I like very much the shape of the hull, I found also very beautiful pictures of the model. I have made no research about the ship, and as it turned out later - there are no historical evidences about existence of this ship with this name. But this is no problem for me, I like the model very much. My goal is to learn some basic aspects about wooden ship modelling and, of course, finish Independence without rough errors.

By now I have finished the first hull planking. I have more sanding, then I have to glue the keel and make the second hull planking. About the decks - I am planning to make treenails, but this will be later, when I finish second hull planking.

Best regards,

Stoyne

Thank you, Gary. I have used soldering iron to burnout and blacken sides of deck planks. But I wasn't able to make blackening very even in this way. Also I'm afraid that blackening is thicker that it should be, but... I have no spare planks and I have made deck planking like this. Actually it is acceptable for me, for now, but I can try a different technique in the future.

Thank you, popeye. I'm not sure that I'm working very fast, but I'm trying not to make mistakes, that will annoy me later.

Thank you, Kent. I'm beginner in wooden ship modelling and I'm sure that I can learn a lot of things here.

Hi Stoyne,

Welcome to SoS ! I am very glad you joined ! A very, very nice start. Excellent craftsmanship on this first build.

I will certainly be watching this. It is like my Satisima Trinidad build. Very little information is available. However, it seems that you are going to do very well with this build log.

I used a mechanical pencil and darkened the edges of the planks (.5 mm thick) on the Royal Louis. See what you think. It is not as hard as it sounds if you do the full length of the strip at one time before cutting the planks.
Happy modeling,
Gary Maple

Gary, I see. I can try with a mechanical pencil next time.

Hello Stoyne and welcome!

I started the same kit some time ago and my build log is on this site too. I'm making a number of changes to the kit, but I think Artesania Latina kits are great. Two of my earliest ship modeler were Artesania Latina kits.

Looks like you've done a really great job so far. Your hull planking looks excellent, and your deck planks look great too. I'm looking forward to watching your progress.

Clare
