Half Moon by Corel

Postby jct » Sun Dec 22, 2013 7:53 am

This will be a new experience for me in two ways, 1st this is only my second build of a wooden ship, though I have built many plastic kits, and 2nd building with have a virtual audience looking over my shoulder!

The kit is Corel's Half Moon, which has received some attention here from others, I agree it is a very nice kit.

I'll include as many photos of progress as I can and try to clarify with commentary when appropriate. I've already committed a few mistakes and will have to deal with them later, my hope is that others just starting out can gain from my experience and enjoy the hobby as I do.

1-deck planking.jpg
This is the first pic I have of the build ( didn't decide to do a log until it was this far along) as you can see there will be a lot of filling and shaping before the second plank layer can be applied. I glued up the frames before I realized there were issues to correct...build and learn!

This pic show a little jig for getting all the deck planks a consistent size, just a true wood block with a few brads, 4 to keep the plank stable and another to set the size. works well

Looking good and like the syringe idea, if it wasn't for the mistakes we all made along the way then we would not progress and improve our skills i should know as iv'e made lots along the way.

Should make a nice build. I keep a notebook handy and list my way of solving a mistake or list what to watch for on the next build so as to avoid making the same mistake. I go back after the information gets cold and read the notes to see if I need to write them over so that they make sense.
Happy modeling,
Gary Maple

As I stated earlier I glued up the bulkheads prior to checking them, I had to shim the sides to prevent having a huge divot in the side of the hull

Hi JCT, hope you had a nice Christmas!

Nice progress on your Half Moon model. What are you using to bend the planks?

I've seen a few Half Moon builds and it's a nice looking ship. You are planting the seed in the back of my head to try to build one myself one of these days.

By the way, that's a great ideal about the syringe. I've seen that done before, but your post and my current builds are really making me think about doing the same. That's would make some things a lot easier. And, less messier!

Hey Clare,
The syringe does make things neater, just be sure to clean it well at the end of each session the glue likes to set up fast.
For bending I've just been soaking in hot water and manually bending around a couple 1inch glass grinding bits from my glass grinder, once they dry I remove the clamps. The bend is a little to much for the bow so I've been re-wetting them and relaxing the bend prior to mounting. I've a pic in the camera I'll download next time I post.

Build continued, started this session by carving away some of the thickness at the dead wood to allow the planks to sit more flush and to allow for the instillation of a separate stern post. After I proceed to soak and bend a plank that will eventually become the garboard plank. After drying the planks were trimmed and glued in place with a combination of CA and woos glues.
