Billing Boats AmericA 1:72 scale

Post by popeye » Thu Feb 14, 2013 10:57 pm

I started this build on the 29th of December. I was waiting for paints, woods, and other supplies. since this kit will be built out of the box, it can be done with what I have. I don't see a whole lot that needs to be bashed.....except for the skylight, and perhaps the grating. everything is going to feel like i'm moving at light speed, but it will calm down as soon as I get the build caught up. if you wish to read the build log I done on this ship, you can find them here:

http://wenzelswharf.wordpress.com/2012/ ... scale-kit/

this kit is a fairly new release

this is a split keel assembly. it was kind of a problem figuring out the rib numbers, but once I did, it went OK. I did find a problem with one of the ribs, but that was an easy fix as well. this was done on the 30th of December.

I didn't get back to working on it till the 11th of January. hull planking begins the planking wasn't that good.....looked like it was cut with a dull blade. I sanded the edges and beveled the mating edge, and it went fairly well. where this is to be a wood hull, I allowed some of the plank lines to show up. after the hull was sanded, it came out pretty smooth. if you wish to see what the planks looked like, I did add it into the build log......you can read about it there.

on the 12th of January, I did the balsa cap for the transom......sorry folks, but I have a dislike for balsa, in this medium. I had my problems with it, but I mixed up some sawdust and white glue, and I was able to repair the non-conformity

I sanded the hull quite a bit.......my arms were tired. I decided to work on the deck fittings. I did away with the skylight structure plug. I created the structure, making it appear hollow. after the roof was cemented together, I will fill in the openings with the window maker and make the glass for them. with the inside of the skylight painted flat black, it will appear as though the inside is an open area.

this was done on the 18th of January. this should bring the build to the present.

I have more progress to report on this build....I should have it up shortly. I pulled myself away from the lobsie twins, so I could do some work on it.

it's not a lot of progress at this point, but I'll make up for it on the next posting.
