Midwest Maine lobster boat - 3/4" to 1' scale

Postby popeye » Tue Jan 22, 2013 5:05 am

I could have sworn that I started a build log here on this one. my bad :oops:

as the name implies......this is a lobster boat, a working boat. I don't have the pictures in my computer at the moment, but I'll get some on here soon. it started out well enough......the only real trouble was in doing the balsa hull panels supplied with the kit. I'm so used to planking.....never done this sort of 'skin' before.......it became a holy 'ole mess! I planked over that and solved the problem. the paint went well, but while this was going on, the boat began to take on a much different look.......the look of a pleasure boat. while this was a definitely a subject killer, to be sure, I kinda fell in love with the idea, and went nuts on it. now, it's at the point of no return.....it's a pleasure boat, without ever getting a single lobster on it's deck! in looking at the plans, I had imagined doing all kinds of stuff to it.........that's what probably killed the subject. the blueprint plans are very nice.....I though about doing a scratch build......and so I did. there will be a mirror build in the scratch build forum on this other vessel. these two in tandem will hopefully show what versions can be made for this particular hull and construction. I will have the pictures on here shortly.

OK......so I fibbed a little :D here are the photos of where she is now. I do have a few others I want to share with you......particularly the hull planking, after that scary 'skin' job I did. this will be a spoiler though......you will see shots of the Denny-Zen, the actual lobster boat build. my initial build is called the Phylly C., named after my wife :D {major brownie points here} {good excuse to get extra wood :lol: :lol: :lol: }

The deck treatment on this "lobster/pleasure" boat is great! Very professional looking. Your mind never rests does it? You are always coming up with clever options for each build you do. I love it.

hello Bob. this is what happens when your thinking of what you could do to a boat like this.......when your working on a boat like this :lol: :lol:

it just doesn't end well :D I'm afraid you'll never see a lobster pot dragged over the sheer of this baby......I wasn't upset at all when I realized what I had done. I just pulled out some wood and made another one. you going to love scratch building.....you well on your way. thanks for the good word my friend! :D

I have an update on this build for you. I had made some real progress with the Denny-Zen. looking at them together.....I can safely say that I can now begin to do them in tandem with each other. since I did them on the Denny-Zen, I did the roofs and grab rails for the Phylly C.

Looking really sweet. Two personalities from one set of plans. Engineering at its finest.
