Build Log OcCre Montanes

Post by CharlesEdward » Sat Apr 21, 2012 9:16 am

This is a 1:70 scale model but even at that the model will measure 49" in length by 35" in height and about 19" wide when finished. The OcCre kit quality was excellent as the false keel and all 15 or 16 bulkheads fitted perfectly with just very limited sanding of bumps where the pieces were cut out of the laser cut wood stock. I finished assembling the entire carcass or hull in about two days.

The carcass looks good, all frames have fit perpendicular to the false keel with a tad flexibility to enable a proper fitting of the planked decks, part #27 and #32. In fact the support beam, part #15, going through the bulkheads is still not glued yet per the instructions.

Started planking the two halves of the lower deck, part #27 with parts #28, 1 x 3mm. Darkened the edges of the planking strips #28 with a marking pen, too much bleeding, but the pencil is just not working as i like, I eventually used a combination of both dark pencel and marking pen to simulate the chalking. The pictures here show a dry fit of both halves of the lower deck before I had completed the planking. I cut the deck planking into ten to twelve foot scale lengths, which is about 40 - 45 mm in actual length.

After attaching the lower gun decks in place and allowing the glue to dry I attached the upper deck cross beams in place which will support the upper gun deck when deck planking is completed.

I continued with planking of the upper gun deck. When completed I assembled the two halves of the upper gun deck to the carcass as shown below. My next post will show some close up shots of the assembled kit.

As promised some close up pictures of the assembled lower and upper gun decks as well as some bow and stern support filler blocks that were added per instructions. The columns were 3mm dowels cut to size.

This looks like a good quality kit. However, I like double planked ships since that is how the real ones were done. On warships, the cannon areas were triple planked which is what I have added to the Le Soleil Royal that I am working on. Deck planking was usually 20 to 24 foot lengths. Good luck.

After the upper and lower gun decks were in place the instructions called for the bow and stern filler pieces to be glued into place. You can see them here plus an overhead view of the model before I started to add the gun deck bulwarks that are required prior to starting the hull planking.

The kit included port and starboard pre-cut upper and lower gun bulwarks in addition to the main deck bulwark which starts to hint at the entire look of the model. But before that you have to make the dummy gun mounts which will be used for the dummy guns, of course. There are quite a few of them. The instructions called for just using the plywood cut to size to fit between the bulkheads but I determined that a base as shown in the second picture would make the dummy mounts easier to glue to the decks at a almost 90 degree angle to the decks. The first picture below shows the model before commencing hull operations.

The precut upper and lower gun deck bulwark pieces are shown here assembled on the port side of the Montanes. The uupper bulwark is where the dummy gun mounts shown in the previous post are behind. The lower bulwark uses a 14 x 14 mm piece of plywood painted black glued to the reverse side of each gun port. As you notice there really isn't a deck behind the lowest gun bulwark so these false backs are needed to affix the dummy guns to at a later date.
