Thanks Donnie, you are both far too kind, but I am enjoying my first ship build with all the new challenges very much.

I started out dreading the idea of planking, turned out I like doing it and will be looking forward to the planking on my next build :D

Almost there now with the first planking, about four more on each side to do:

Spiling:

There are several takes on this in the books, using dividers etc. Spile when one gets an awkward shaped plank, perhaps a bit wider than a standard plank for example. I got an odd gap to fill as the side planking met the bottom planking. This could have been avoided by adding any 'oddness' to the garboard at the beginning of the planking, I did not go that way though so have to deal with the odd gap that results:

Transfer pattern of gap to tracing paper:

Draw out gap, I used french curves and a metal rule:

Pattern transferred to some thin card from the tracing paper:

Test fit, the template fitted pretty well with no adjustment necessary:

As all was well I transferred the pattern to the wood. Piece of wider Pear I had bought just for this kind of eventuality. Adjustments could have been made at this stage if necessary before transferring the pattern to the wood:

First planking complete on the Larboard! :banana-dance:

Just the other side to finish off now.

Thanks Zoltan, I think I learnt a lot taking my time and have a good solid base for the second planking. :handgestures-thumbup:

You must remember that this is a hobby and not work. A hobby you take your time and enjoy. At work well you are expected to complete a job in the least amount of time

Cheers

Thanks Geoff, not sure what it is with ship building, but I have been much better at enjoying the process and taking my time than I have been with other models in the past, I'm very addicted to it already!

Time for a triple banana dance:

:banana-dance: :banana-dance: :banana-rock:

First planking is complete! From dreading it, to looking forward to it, to realizing it was going to take absolutely ages to complete, it is all done:

I will leave it a couple of weeks to really settle down before the final rub down. Have plenty of little jobs to do on the lamps etc to keep me busy for a while, so thought it best to make sure the glue has really dried out completely.

Will be cracking open a bottle of the good stuff to celebrate tonight :text-lol:
