There are several takes on this in the books, using dividers etc. Spile when one gets an awkward shaped plank, perhaps a bit wider than a standard plank for example. I got an odd gap to fill as the side planking met the bottom planking. This could have been avoided by adding any 'oddness' to the garboard at the beginning of the planking, I did not go that way though so have to deal with the odd gap that results:
Transfer pattern of gap to tracing paper:
Draw out gap, I used french curves and a metal rule:

Test fit, the template fitted pretty well with no adjustment necessary:
As all was well I transferred the pattern to the wood. Piece of wider Pear I had bought just for this kind of eventuality. Adjustments could have been made at this stage if necessary before transferring the pattern to the wood:
