Trumpeter 1/200 USS Iowa (late 1944)

Post by scowdin » Sun Feb 28, 2016 6:44 pm

This is my recently completed Trumpeter 1/200 USS Iowa configured for late 1944. I used Testors acrylic paints for the Measure 32 Design 1B camouflage although the red anti-fouling is Krylon red primer right out of the spray can. For upgrades I used the Pontos brass photo-etch set, brass props by G Factor, and an extra Kingfisher by Riich Models (the Iowa class carried 3 Kingfishers). Build time took about 18 months. This model will be donated to the USS Iowa (Pacific Battleship Center) in San Pedro CA this fall. The bottom picture shows the Iowa alongside my USS Arizona, also a Trumpeter 1/200 kit which I completed about 4 years ago. I backdated this kit from 1941 to 1939 which required changes to the foremast and the scout planes which were Curtiss Seagulls in 1939 rather than the Kingfishers included in the kit for the 1941 configuration. Unfortunately commercial kits of the Seagulls are not available so I scratch-built mine out of basswood and used some of the Kingfisher parts provided in the kit (such as the floats). I used the brass photo-etch supplied in the kit.

Absolutely beautiful work. I hate to admit that I know very little about this era of ships. I want to build one, one day soon. I like your color scheme too.
I guess a lot of research went into these.

Amazing job that the belong in the museum. The photo etched upgrades really make it look proper and gives it so much detail.
Happy modeling,
Gary Maple

Thanks guys!

Yes a lot of research went into the Iowa (as well as Arizona) which is half the fun of building a specific ship at a specific time! For Iowa class battleships numerous resources are available, but the one I relied on the most was Iowa Class Battleships by Robert F Sumrall. Absolutely indispensable. For ship camouflage "the source" is the Synder & Short ship camouflage website: http://www.shipcamouflage.com/ I am extremely lucky that the brains behind this website lives here in Sacramento--Randy Short. Randy provided invaluable assistance on the camouflage for Iowa.

Fantastic job. I hope you do an update in the Fall when you donate her.

Thank you--I would be happy to post an update when she is delivered. Pacific Battleship Center staff are planning a multi-nation WWII battleship exhibit of 1/200 scale vessels, including the Iowa, a Yamato currently under construction by another modeler (a Nichimo kit I believe), and a Bismark (probably also a Trumpeter kit) which I may have a hand in. I recently found out that my Arizona will be shipping out too.

That is great that they want both ships. Glad I saw them when I did.

Steve,

Those photos of your model look terrific. But, seeing your model in person was a real treat! I haven't built a steel navy ship in a long time and my related skills have faded. They were never up to where I could build a model of the quality of your work. Fantastic. Beautiful job. It's great to be able to revisit it here.
