The Smit Rotterdam - Tugboat

Postby Sjors55 » Sat Nov 26, 2011 11:33 am

I've build this one over six or seven years ago. The only thing that's missing is her name.
Because it took me so long to build her, the stickers were too old to use, they just crumbled away. I bought some sticky letters, but that wasn't a succes. So she's still without a name.

The build is not as complicated as it may look. There is a lot that you have to do yourself, like the bow and the back. It is a balsablock in one piece and you have to shape it yourself.
The only problem I ran into were the ray tubes. How do I fit them in place. For me it was the second time that I build de Smit Rotterdam. The first one, when she was almost done, became chewing gum for my dog, she liked it as well. There was nothing left of it........
A few pictures how she looks like.

Sjors,

Are the cranes and all the deck fittings plastic, wood, or some type of metal.

Everything is wood. Only the machinery is metal. You have to see it as that you build a cabin. This one was laser cut. The portholes and ray tubes are plastic. Also the lifeboat. But the little rubberboat just below the bridge is also one block of balsa. Just like the bow and the end you have to shape it yourself . You can say that you also work a little bit of scratchbuild.

I love this ship, I have wanted to build one since I got into ship modeling. I know a few kits are made in plastic, but a large scale wooden Smit Rotterdam is my dream build.
Great job Sjors on a very cool vessel.

Thank you for the compliment Tony!

She was indeed totally build from wood. And it was a pleasure building her.
