Chesapeake Bay Flattie Intarsia...."MARIA G"

Postby teleman » Sat Nov 10, 2012 2:10 pm

Hello All,
I took a Midwest Model Skill Level 1 Kit of the Chesapeake Bay Flattie. I decided not to paint the little boat, but instead color with wood(INTARSIA). I also followed some advise from Howard Chapelle's book American Small Sailing Craft. This is really a wonderful book to follow. It is rigged per Chapelle's book. But I must say Midwest's kit was very close in a lot of ways comparing it to Chapelle's book.

The woods used were swiss pear, holly, boxwood, and ebony.....I would like to thank JEFF HAYES from HOBBYMILL for his superb material......

Though the kit had the cabin sealed I decide to kit bash the cabin a bit by building a working companionway, and adding a center board trunk. I also made the roof of the cabin removable as to show it on display with or without the roof on.

I decided to go with INTARSIA because I wanted to improve my building and glueing skills. I knew with INTARSIA I had to be precise as possible, because I could not use paint to cover bad spots. Plus my glueing had to be precise to help in future builds.

This little boat means a lot to me, because she now has the name of "MARIA G". It is in honor of my Older Sister who passed away this past August. It will be given to my Parents in memory of my sister. I miss her so much.....

I hope you like the pictures....

Hello Mario,

Congratulations. She turned out beautiful. I love the wood colors you used.

It is a beautiful gesture to name her "MARIA G" and give her to your parents in memory of your sister.

Take care,

Anja

After 1.5 years I'll come with my response :? :?

Anyways, she looks real good. I like the lines/curves of this type. Isn't this it known as a 'Chesapeake Bay Sharpie'?
Cheers,
Carl
